Twins, Crede Agree To One-Year Deal
The Twins and third baseman Joe Crede have agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth a reported $2.5 million.
The pact includes incentives that could raise the value of the deal to $7 million.
Crede, who has had two major back surgeries in the last two seasons, hit .248 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs last season for the White Sox.
"We've been looking for a corner guy. You always look to upgrade, see if you can get an impact player," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I mean, we went into the spring looking for one and this is the guy. This is the guy that we talked about way, way back. This guy, if he's healthy, can do a lot of damage."
Rays Avoid Arbitration With Aybar
The Rays agreed to a two-year deal with utilityman Willy Aybar worth $2.6 million on Wednesday.
"We feel like he brings a lot to our club. ... We feel like he's going to fit in here for a number of years," Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said.
Aybar hit .253 with 10 homers and 33 RBIs in 95 games with the Rays in 2008, his first full season in the majors.
Braves, Johnson Agree To One-Year Deal
The Braves have agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.825 million with second baseman Kelly Johnson.
Johnson posted career highs in batting average (.287), games (150), at-bats (547), hits (157), doubles (39), RBI (69) and stolen bases (11) last season.
Gagne Gets Invite To Brewers' Camp
The Brewers and reliever Eric Gagne have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Gagne had a $10 million, one-year deal with the Brewers last season, but blew six save chances as the team's closer and wound up on the disabled list.
Dodgers, Ethier Avoid Arbitration With New Deal
Andre Ethier agreed to a $3.1 million, one-year deal with the Dodgers on Tuesday, which allowed the parties to avoid an arbitration hearing.
Ethier hit .305 with 20 homers and 77 RBIs last year.
He had asked for $3.75 million, and the team had offered $2.65 million.
"We were all ready to go, sitting there staring at each other waiting for someone to flinch, and I think everyone started flinching then," Ethier said. "Both sides knew resolve was the best. There was a lot to be lost on either side of the results.
Reds, Encarnacion Agree On 2-Year, $7.6M Deal
The Reds and third baseman Edwin Encarnacion have agreed to a two-year contract that will pay at least $7.6 million through the 2010 season.
Encarnacion was the last Cincinnati player in arbitration.
The deal calls for $2 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010, along with an $850,000 signing bonus and performance bonuses of $25,000 for 600 plate appearances.
McLouth, Pirates Agree To 3-Year Deal
Outfielder Nate McLouth reached an agreement with the Pirates on Tuesday on a $15.75M, three-year deal that includes a team option for 2012, according to an Associated Press report.
